Project: Daylighting Model
PHT Lighting Design cleverly imitated natural daylight for the interior spaces of this hotel.
A general overview of the project:
Since people first began building shelters, they’ve always struggled with lighting interior spaces. To do this, they’ve had to either bring in natural light or create an imitation of sunlight, first using fire and later electric lighting. But for the renovation of the lobby at the Hyatt Herald Square hotel, PHT Lighting Design used a third technique. For an interior space with no windows or glass ceilings, the designers created the illusion of sunlight using glass blocks harmoniously illuminated with white LED fixtures.

The lobby layout:
The space in question, arranged with a reception desk and a waiting area, had been left unlit because of an 18-meter-wide elevator core positioned at the center of the lobby, along with two enclosed staircases leading to different parts of the hotel. From the moment Peiheng Tsai, founder of PHT Lighting Design, first saw the space, she understood that lighting would play a central role in uniting the two halves of the lobby.
Working together with the client and architects Paul Vega and Vennie Lau of the New Jersey-based firm VLDG, Tsai conceived a light-box structure that would wrap around the entire perimeter of the lobby, giving hotel guests the impression that the space was naturally lit. “The whole idea was to somehow create the illusion that there are windows,” Tsai said.
Built from glass blocks lit with white LEDs, the lighting system is a convincing imitation — so much so that visitors have no idea they’re standing in a 20-story building with no natural light. The system shifts the LEDs from 5000K during the day, to 3500K in the afternoon, and then to 2700K at night. Thanks to an astronomical clock, the lighting also syncs with seasonal changes in sunrise and sunset times.

The bar area:
Tsai had never designed a lighting solution like this before, nor had she ever used tunable-white LED fixtures, which were a new addition to the market when the project began. “We knew it might work, but we didn’t know what it would look like,” she says. Tsai and her team built a similar mock-up in their own office, testing several light sources to arrive at a clear concept on which to base the hotel’s lighting.

The rear lobby:
Throughout the space, the lighting further reinforces the warm atmosphere envisioned by the architects. The elevator core, once positioned at the center of the lobby, is now wrapped in warm gold-toned textures combined with vertical laminated wood strips, behind which 2700K LED fixtures are hidden, reflecting off the bright surface and making the wall appear to glow. In other parts of the lobby, decorative fixtures hang delicately, softly and intimately lighting the space.
