Robert Sonneman: The Visionary Who Turned Light into Art

In today’s article, we celebrate Robert Sonneman, the designer who transformed lighting into an art form in the 1960s. Known as a pioneer of modern lighting design, Sonneman shaped a legacy that continues to influence interiors and lighting manufacturers worldwide. His creations — bold yet minimal, architectural yet human — remain timeless icons of form and function.

From New York to Modernism: The Early Years

Born and raised in New York City, Sonneman developed a love for art from an early age. He studied at Rhodes Preparatory School in Manhattan and later at the Art Students League of New York, where he immersed himself in painting, sculpture, and composition.

After serving in the Navy, he joined a small lighting shop — a moment that changed the course of his life. Surrounded by lamps, fixtures, and customers fascinated by design, Sonneman discovered his passion for modernism and European minimalism.

At just 23 years old, he had already mastered the technical skills to engineer his own designs and opened his first lighting factory. What began as a local workshop soon became a global design name.

At the forefront of this 1970s advertisement is Sonneman’s Mushroom table lamp in a distinct mustard hue. It was constructed of spun aluminum and was topped off with a chrome tipped bulb. Though this piece is no longer in production, some of his original designs from the era are still around today.

    Six Decades of Design Excellence

Nearly sixty years later, Sonneman’s products remain as relevant as ever. Many of his early models have been reinterpreted with new technologies, proving that great design never goes out of style.

Sonneman’s philosophy rests on a simple but profound idea:

“Lighting design demands a deep commitment to technology, material knowledge, and manufacturing precision.”

His work draws inspiration from modern masters such as Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe, while also reflecting the industrial design purity of Porsche, Knoll, and Braun. This blend of architectural rigor and sculptural elegance defines his signature aesthetic.

Form, Function, and the American Modernist Spirit

Throughout his career, Sonneman has balanced form and function — turning lighting design into a sculptural art.
In the early 1970s, his advertisements for Bloomingdale’s revealed an American modernist style that was both minimal and cosmopolitan.

    The Mushroom Table Lamp (1970s)

Among his most iconic pieces, the Mushroom table lamp embodied the clean lines of modernism. Made from spun aluminum and topped with a chrome-tipped bulb, it came in bold finishes such as mustard yellow. Though no longer in production, it remains a collector’s favorite.

    The Orbiter Lamp (1967)

Another classic, the Orbiter lamp, designed in 1967, featured a mechanically inspired arc design that balanced movement and simplicity. It remains in production to this day, a testament to Sonneman’s enduring vision.

    Suspenders: A Legacy of Innovation

One of Sonneman’s most groundbreaking systems, the Suspenders collection, was originally conceived in 1989.
The design consists of interconnected linear arms supporting suspended luminaires, forming geometric configurations that are both functional and decorative.

With today’s LED technology, Suspenders has evolved into a versatile modular system — available in single drops, cluster formations, or a striking Tri-Bar configuration that suspends three 36″ linear power bars with integrated LEDs.

Unlike the halogen-heavy original, the modern Suspenders system delivers energy efficiency, minimal heat emission, and remarkable design flexibility.

Sonneman continues to develop innovative lighting designs that provide a sculptural presence. Most recently, he launched the Inside-Out collection, his first venture into lighting with both indoor and outdoor applications. Shown here is Light Frames, which allows light to be projected downward or up and down to create a halo profile.                                          For a subtler statement, the Mini Single sconce consists of a single drum style luminaire that hangs from a wall-mounted power feed. Throughout the collection, the LED luminaires are available in eleven different styles, so you’re sure to find the perfect configuration for your home.

    New Frontiers: Inside-Out Collection

Never one to stand still, Sonneman continues to innovate. His Inside-Out collection marks his first venture into lighting that seamlessly bridges indoor and outdoor applications.

Among its standout designs is Light Frames, which projects light both upward and downward to create a halo-like architectural effect.
With such pieces, Sonneman continues to push the boundaries of what lighting can express — structure, atmosphere, and emotion.

    A Lasting Legacy in Light

Robert Sonneman’s contribution to modern design goes far beyond lamps.
He transformed lighting into an architectural discipline, blending art, engineering, and poetry into every creation.

His vision lives on in contemporary interiors worldwide — and in every designer who believes that light is more than function; it’s an experience.

7 Most Frequently Asked Questions About Home Lighting

As lighting experts (and yes, self-confessed lighting enthusiasts), we get asked a lot of questions about how lighting impacts the home.

The truth is, the right lighting doesn’t just determine how a room looks — it defines how a space feels.
It can create depth, drama, and atmosphere, while influencing our mood and wellbeing.

Here are the seven most frequently asked questions about lighting, along with expert answers from the team at Vitalux.

    1. How much light do I really need?

Getting the right amount of light is the foundation of every good lighting plan.

Modern LED bulbs are measured in lumens, not watts — and the number you need depends on your space:

    • Living rooms / bedrooms: 10–20 lumens per square foot

    • Bathrooms / kitchens: 70–80 lumens per square foot

However, brightness alone isn’t everything. The right lighting depends on the size, layout, purpose, and mood you want to create.
With balanced illumination, you can achieve the perfect mix of ambience and function.

Pro Tip: Use dimmable LED lighting to adjust the intensity throughout the day.

    2. What is layering light, and why is it so important?

The best lighting designs don’t rely on one single source — they use layered lighting.

This means combining three types of light:

    • Ambient light – your general illumination

    • Task light – focused lighting for specific activities

    • Accent light – decorative lighting that adds drama and depth

A layered setup gives you flexibility, allowing you to adapt your lighting for different moods, times of day, or functions.

Explore more in our article: How to Layer Light Like a Designer

    3. How does lighting affect your mood?

Light has a powerful impact on how we feel and function.
Long before electricity, our bodies followed the rhythm of sunlight — waking with the dawn and resting at dusk.

Today, lighting still regulates our circadian rhythm, influencing energy levels, focus, and sleep quality.
Poor lighting can make us feel tired or disconnected, while well-designed lighting can boost mood and productivity.

At Vitalux, we specialize in Human-Centric Lighting (HCL) — light that adapts to your natural rhythm and enhances wellbeing.

    4. What’s the best colour temperature for a home?

The colour temperature of a light affects both appearance and emotion.
    Measured in Kelvins (K):

    • Warm white (2,700K–3,000K): creates a relaxing, cosy atmosphere — perfect for living areas.

    • Neutral white (3,500K–4,000K): ideal for kitchens and workspaces.

    • Cool white (4,000K–5,000K): energizing and focused — great for offices or bathrooms.

Tip: For a balanced home, mix warm and neutral lighting for natural transitions between rooms.

    5. How do I choose the right lampshade?

A lampshade may seem like a small detail — but it dramatically changes how light is distributed.

    Consider:

    • Shape: drum, empire, square, oval, or straight empire.

    • Material: silk, cotton, linen, velvet, parchment — each diffuses light differently.

    • Style: choose a lampshade that complements your lamp base and your interior decor.

✨ Example: A linen shade creates a soft, diffused glow, while a metallic interior adds brightness and reflection.

    6. What type of lighting is best for relaxation?

Soft, ambient lighting with warm tones helps the body unwind.
Avoid strong overhead light — instead, use wall sconces, floor lamps, or LED strips behind furniture to create a subtle, calming glow.

For modern setups, consider smart lighting systems that automatically dim in the evening to promote better rest.

    7. How can I make my lighting energy-efficient?

Switching to LED technology is the simplest and most effective way to save energy.
LEDs last up to 25 times longer than traditional bulbs and use 80–90% less electricity.

Many Vitalux products include smart control systems that let you schedule lighting scenes, control brightness remotely, and reduce unnecessary usage.

Sustainable lighting = lower costs + lower environmental impact.

Lighting Design for Wellness and Spa Areas

In the best wellness and spa environments, an unmistakable atmosphere of peace, harmony, and relaxation reigns supreme.
Lighting plays a central role in defining this experience — it shapes emotions, perception, and overall well-being.

To emphasize the concept of comfort, intimacy, and calm, it’s essential to create an ad hoc luminous choreography — a lighting composition that is both captivating and functional for each space.

Below you’ll find professional lighting tips to help you design spa and wellness areas that convey tranquility from the very first moment your guests enter.

    1. Keep Lighting Minimal and Purposeful

When designing lighting for spas, less is more.
A common mistake is installing too many fixtures, which often creates glare and visual fatigue — the opposite of what relaxation should feel like.

Tip: Focus on quality, not quantity.
In our Golden Spa Relax project, pendant lights are used only in the entrance, creating a welcoming and soft transition into the space.
The rest of the environment relies on recessed luminaires and LED profiles, ensuring a clean, soothing aesthetic.

    GOLDEN SPA RELAX

    2. Use Lighting to Guide Guests

In corridors and walkways, light should lead the way while maintaining calmness.
For Golden Spa, we used recessed LED profiles to outline the main paths and wall lighting to emphasize design elements such as sculptures and niches.

This method helps orient guests subtly without overstimulating their vision, allowing the mind to remain relaxed throughout the journey.

    GOLDEN SPA RELAX

    3. Create Comfort in the Massage Room

The massage room is the heart of relaxation — lighting here must support serenity.
Use warm, low-intensity LEDs and dimmable fixtures so therapists can easily adjust brightness to match the treatment or mood.

In Golden Spa Relax, LED strips and mini-spots are integrated with control panels that regulate intensity.
This ensures every detail — from artwork to textiles — is highlighted softly, maintaining a feeling of balance and comfort.

    GOLDEN SPA RELAX

    4. Design Relax Rooms with Adaptive Color

Relax rooms are dedicated to mental rest between treatments.
Here, RGB LED strips are ideal — they allow you to change the color temperature or hue according to the treatment, mood, or time of day.

Soft blue tones promote calm, warm amber creates coziness, and gentle pink light enhances comfort.
Lighting becomes part of the sensory therapy itself.

    GOLDEN SPA RELAX

    5. Choose the Right Fixtures for Wet Areas

Spaces such as showers, saunas, and hammams require lighting with a high IP protection rating due to humidity and steam.
If indirect light is not achievable, use adjustable wall lights or hermetic recessed spots that allow you to direct and control the beam precisely.

For steam environments, IP67 LED strips are a perfect solution — they combine safety, durability, and elegance.
You can even select adjustable color temperatures to personalize each zone of relaxation.

    GOLDEN SPA RELAX

    6. Give Identity and Essence to the Space

Lighting is more than an accessory — it defines the character and emotion of your wellness environment.
By choosing the right products and placements, you give your spa both aesthetic identity and the essence of relaxation that guests will remember.

✨ At Vitalux, we help transform light into atmosphere.
Our spa projects — including Golden Spa Relax — demonstrate how professional lighting design elevates every moment into an experience of well-being.

There are some details that make a difference in a project, and if you would  ask an architect they could mention elements like a designed ceiling, a beautiful fireplace or paintings. But if you ask a lighting architect the illumination of the stairs would make a huge difference for good. Besides the  practical function imagine how beautiful the stairs would look. On the other hand, the lighting of the stairs would increase the security of the external or the internal space.

    What can we suggest?

    #1. LED strip

Under stair lighting using LED strip  is a matter of finding the right length and type of tape light you want, wiring it all together, while simultaneously hiding the cables and power sources. There are two main methods to açomplish this task: the first (and easiest) is to use a single run of lights. This is also the most common type of application you’ll see. A linear strip of LED lights is installed on the staircase wall, illuminating from the side. Tape light have a peel-and-stick backing, but you can also use small silicone brackets or channels to secure the lights, depending on the desired aesthetic. Interconnection cables or pin connectors can be used if you need a gap or if you have an odd length of strip light.

    #2. Staircases or Wall Lights

If you are looking for a slightly more “dramatic” effect, wall lights or staircases are the right suggestion. In addition to illumination, these types of lights also create beautiful effects on the wall. One of the benefits of LED luminaires is the fact that they can be dimmed by allowing you to lower or increase the light as you wish. A  lower light can give you a softer look, while high light helps you a lot during the evening hours.

    #3.Add different levels of lighting

Another way to complete the stair lighting can be to set different levels of illumination. An interesting combination would be the using stair lights and a hanging or wall luminaire in the same space. Another idea would be to place the same lights  on the stairs and on the wall. These methods can highlight also the stair material.

    #4.Pendants

And if you do not like these ideas another option would be to instal a pendant which can be hung on the entire length of the stairs. Both classic and modern models would look quite “IN”

    #5.Outdoor Lighting

In the outdoor space using stair lights is very necessary for security reasons. Illuminators should contain  IP for protection against water and dust. Trends  of lighting give you an infinite choice of models from different styles. With this elements you will have a functional, safe and aesthetic garden.

The Importance of Outdoor Lighting in Restaurants

Why outdoor lighting matters more than ever

As the world reopens and people return to social life, dining outdoors has become a lasting preference.
Restaurants that once focused mainly on interior design are now investing heavily in outdoor environments. Terraces, patios, and open-air courtyards have become essential parts of the dining experience — and so has the importance of lighting.

The key ingredients of restaurant lighting design

    The Appetizer: Security

Before lighting can be beautiful, it must be functional. The first purpose of light is visibility and safety.
Well-lit paths, steps, and parking areas prevent accidents and make guests feel welcome and secure.

Step lighting is a great example: it discreetly illuminates pathways while blending into the design.
For entrances and parking lots, high ambient LED fixtures ensure clear visibility without harsh glare.
Security lighting is not just practical — it’s part of a guest’s comfort and confidence from the moment they arrive.

The Main Course: Performance and Controls

Once safety is ensured, the focus turns to ambiance. Lighting performance defines the mood and emotional tone of the dining experience.

Warm color temperatures (2000K–4500K) are ideal for restaurants, as they create inviting hues that make food look more appetizing and guests feel relaxed.
Warmer tones add depth and softness, while cooler tones can make objects appear flat and lifeless.

Modern LED lighting systems offer advanced control. With mobile apps or smart controls, managers can adjust brightness, color, and temperature to match the time of day or event.
From lunch service to evening cocktails, programmable dimming helps maintain the perfect ambiance — all while saving energy and reducing costs.

When choosing fixtures, consider glare reduction, beam spread, and light distribution to maintain comfort and visual harmony.

    Dessert: Lighting Design

Finally, lighting is not just technical — it’s artistic. It can either blend quietly into the architecture or become the centerpiece of design.

Architectural lighting often uses minimal, hidden fixtures like downlights to create soft ambient illumination.
Decorative lighting, on the other hand, acts as a visual accent: pendant fixtures, garden path lights, string LEDs, or landscape uplights can all elevate the atmosphere and add sophistication.

Lighting designers often highlight focal points — the bar, stage, or central fountain — by combining uplights and downlights for depth and drama.
When designed intentionally, lighting becomes part of the restaurant’s identity — enhancing its elegance, style, and memorability.

In Conclusion – Lighting that keeps customers coming back

Lighting can make or break a restaurant’s atmosphere.
It’s not just about visibility — it’s about creating emotion, comfort, and connection.
Guests may not always notice great lighting, but they’ll always feel its effect.

Well-designed outdoor lighting for restaurants enhances security, saves energy, and turns every dinner into an experience worth repeating.

How to Choose the Right Lighting for Your Kids’ Rooms

Lighting not only serves to illuminate a space but also to complete a interior design project. From floor lamps to hanging lamps, there are a variety of ideas on how you can illuminate a room. Below you will find some ideas on how you can choose the right lighting for your children’s room based on their age ranging from babies to teens.

    Some advice :

    • If your bedroom is short on space, opt for a smaller floor lamp or table lamp to keep the room from feeling too cluttered. If you have extra room, don’t be afraid to choose a hanging pendant, floor lamp or even a table lamp or two.

    • For an average 8-foot high ceiling, hanging pendants should be hung about 12 to 20 inches from the ceiling. As a general rule, smaller pendant lights can be hung lower, while larger lights should be hung higher.

    • A table lamp not only lights up a room, but it also doubles as a piece of room decor.

If you have to illuminate a nursery room then you should be very careful. The number one thing to remember when lighting a nursery is to avoid harsh lighting. Harsh lights can overstimulate, or possibly harm, your baby’s sensitive, developing eyes. Soft lighting minimizes the contrast of light and dark and lets your child’s eyes rest. Also, installing a light dimmer can help create different atmospheres in the room for playing, nursing, and sleeping as well as make those late-night feeding and diaper changing sessions a lot easier.

    Kids’ Bedroom

The most important lighting consideration for your child’s room is safety. You should avoid breakable materials like glass helps avoid any unfortunate disasters. Night lights can keep certain areas of your home illuminated for safety purposes. Kids have a tendency to not stay in one place, so keep a plugin night light by the stairs for any late-night, rogue wanderings. The ceiling lights in your child’s room should add to the aesthetic of the space. Play into a theme with lights like hanging drums or add style with this elegant wood bead chandelier.

    Teenagers Bedroom

When lighting a teenager’s room, it is important to think about what kind of lighting will best serve their needs. Consider how much your teen studies and watches TV, along with any other activities they like to do in their own space. Desks or other areas where your teen will do an activity require task lights often in the form of table or floor lamps. Floor Lamps can also be great for illuminating dark corners or lounge areas for reading or writing. Table lighting can second as decorative accents that add personality to the space.Add layers of light fixtures that they can adjust to their liking, such as recessed lighting, an eye-catching chandelier, and table lamps. Consider hanging lights on each side of the bed to serve as great bedside lights without taking up space on the nightstand.

We often get asked which type of LED lighting to choose. Whether it’s for LED Strips or LED bulbs, we have three types of whites available: Warm White, that generates around 3000 Kelvin Degrees (3000K), Natural White that generates around 4500Kelvin degrees (4500K) and Cool White that generates between 5000 and 6000 Kelvin Degrees (5000-6000K). Warm White is a yellowish that resembles a traditional incandescent or halogen light. Cool White on its side, leans towards shades of blue and more like the light you would get from a neon.

Although we all perceive light in a different way and personal tastes vary, there are some scenarios where most people agree on the most appropriate lighting type.

    We recommend Warm White for:

The living room, dining room, bedroom or any other room where you want soft lighting. Warm white is more relaxing for the eyes and softens the skin tone and reduces imperfections. We all look better in warm white.

    We recommend Cool White for:

The kitchen, the garage, the workshop, product displays, hair salons, make-up room, industrial applications or any other application that requires a lighting that will represent the real color of an object. Furthermore, cool white is always more luminous than warm white.

For LED strips, the same principles can be applied, with a few small differences. For LED lighting under kitchen cabinets, most people will turn to Cool White. However for more rustic or country looking kitchens with wood cabinets and counters, we suggest to go with Warm White. Cool White has a more modern look and will best suit laboratory kitchens, granite counters, tiles and similar materials.

In a nutshell, we can conclude that Cool White LED lighting best suits practical applications while Warm White is best for living areas. However, as mentioned earlier, everyone has different tastes. When in doubt, buy a bulb of each kind to see which one you prefer, prior to buying bulbs for the whole house.

    What about Natural White?

If you feel like the Cool White is too blue for your taste and the Warm White too yellow, then take a look at Natural White lighting. Our Natural White 5050 LED Strip kit stands somewhere in the middle, at 4500K, a white light that won’t alter your perception of colors. It’s a great solution for anyone doing precision work with makeup, hair color, photos, illustrations, paintings or anything requiring an uncompromised look at colors.
